Indian Coffee History
Coffee was brought to India by a man who smuggled it into the country by hiding 7 coffee beans in his beard and then planting them on Indian soil. India’s history with coffee dates back 400 years with there currently being approximately 2,50,000 coffee estates and farms in total in the coffee growing districts of India.

India as a Global Coffee Producer
India is the third largest coffee producing country in the world, right after Brazil and Vietnam. “The estimated coffee production in India was over 393 thousand metric tons for fiscal year 2023,” according to Statista. In 2020, approximately 3% of the world’s global output of coffee came from India. Coorg (Kodagu), Karnataka produces about 33% of the total coffee in India. India was the largest Asian coffee exporter in 2022 with Italy, Germany, Russia and Belgium accounting for most coffee export destinations.
